After performing at the opening ceremony for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, Lady Gaga inadvertently had something else to celebrate: her engagement to longtime partner Michael Polansky. In a TikTok posted by then-French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, the pop star is seen introducing the tech investor to the politician as her fiancé, something fans quickly seized on. However, even though this was the first time the singer officially used her partner's new title on camera, she started wearing a large diamond on her left ring finger in April of 2024, immediately sparking rumors of her marital status. 

Her engagement ring, an oval-cut diamond that’s approximately eight carats, is estimated to be worth $578,000. However, that the impressive sparkler isn’t what Polansky used to pop the question. In a recent interview with E! News, Gaga said that her partner proposed with a blade of grass. “He said to me, ‘If I ever proposed to you, how do I do that?’” the pop star told the outlet. “And I said, ‘Just get a blade of grass from the backyard and wrap it around my finger.’ And he did. He did that when he proposed.” Even though the singer now wears a more prominent diamond, she said still honors the original proposal by wearing a green ring. 

The singer expanded on the deeper meaning behind the blade of grass at the Little Monster Press Conference hosted by Spotify on February 27, 2025. “My backyard and those blades of grass was also the place where I saw my friend Sonya get married, and then two months later, she passed away,” she said at the event. “There was so much loss in that backyard and in my life. You know those places in your life where it’s like, maybe your happy place but also your sad place? So that song, that’s what Mayhem is to me. So it’s a very special song to me.”

The blade of grass isn’t just relevant to the duo’s engagement story—but also to the pop star’s newest album, which was released today. One of the track’s, “Blade of Grass” speaks to the story of the proposal, and Gaga co-wrote the song with Polansky. “I started to think about everything I've been through up until that moment,” she said in the interview. “So, the song is actually kind of haunting. I'll never forget when we were writing the bridge, I said, ‘I'll give you something, but it's no diamond ring.’ And he said, ‘The air that I'm breathing.’” The singer opened up more about the process of collaborating with her future husband at the Spotify event. “It was a very special moment and I started writing that song at home with him, brought him into the studio, and Gesaffelstein [a producer and collaborator] was there,” she said.
