Know what you’re buying: it arrives as a kit, so you (or your most patient friend) apply the decal, and this shop’s 4.4-star rating is lower than most on our list. The payoff is staying power, since the maker says, “When filled with high quality helium, the balloons can stay afloat for days.” Order two weeks ahead, and size up to 36 inches ($21) if it’s the centerpiece.

Fall party, fall palette: this kit comes in the autumn tones pictured, with an optional “FALL IN love” script that is the best pun available to you this month. CherCanDoIt is one of the biggest balloon shops on Etsy, with more than 245,000 sales, and it ships from Pennsylvania in about two business days. Up to four words, laser cut, on a pick: “Engaged!” works, so does “Finally” or both your first names. Unfinished wood is $21.99 at full price (it was on sale for $14.29 when we checked, with the sale ending within a day), and painted gold, black or glitter runs a few dollars more. The Texas shop says each topper “is laser cut and painted with High gloss acrylic food safe paint,” and at about 6 inches wide it’s sized for a cake with a 5- to 7-inch top. What do you need to decorate for an engagement party at home?
Less than the internet suggests. Work by spot: a welcome sign or balloon cluster at the door so guests know they found the right house, one photo wall near good light, napkins and a few bud vases on the bar and food tables, candles if the party runs past sunset, and a topper for whatever dessert you’re serving. Clear a side table for gifts even if the invitation said none, because someone’s aunt is bringing one anyway. Order custom pieces three weeks out and pick up helium the day of.
