As you start to plan your nuptials, you and your partner will have to determine the decades-old traditions you want to embrace on your big day—and those you want to skip. While you may decide to forgo tossing your bouquet and making a grand entrance into your reception space, you may opt to participate in the time-honored custom of cutting into your wedding cake. And as a result, you'll need to choose the type of confection you want. Maybe you envision you and your new spouse slicing into a vintage-inspired dessert with Lambeth piping— or are drawn to a one-tier heart-shaped confection that complements your color scheme. However, if you're looking for something that feels more reminiscent of a work of art than a traditional sweet treat, consider a sculptural cake.
In addition to being a delicious addition to your reception, this type of confection also serves as an aesthetically-pleasing focal point at your post-ceremony celebration. Through a number of modern techniques, such as acrylic risers, intricate sugar work, and metal accents, designers can now transform traditional cakes into sophisticated works of art that feel as though they belong in a museum. This kind of sophisticated and innovative dessert may also be the perfect fit if you're planning on hosting a contemporary-inspired affair for your big day.
Searching for a sculptural wedding cake to inspire your own artistic confection? Here, we've rounded up 11 of our favorite examples from real weddings. Read on to see them all.
