Key Takeaways
- Only six percent of U.S. couples reach 50 years of marriage, making it a unique achievement worth celebrating.
- Consider a gold-themed gift or a meaningful experience like a vow renewal or anniversary party for your celebration.
- Reflect on the half-century you've spent together and appreciate the strong bond you've built over the years.
While every year of marriage is worth celebrating, there's something particularly special about making it to the 50-year mark. This milestone, which is commonly referred to as your golden wedding anniversary, is an important one to observe for a multitude of reasons. After half a century together, you and your partner have likely learned and grown a lot. And as a result, you may want to take time to reflect on your union, acknowledge the critical role that you've played in one another's lives, and set future goals.
50 years together is significant—and how you choose to celebrate this occasion should reflect that. You two may opt to exchange gifts, spend time with family, or throw an anniversary party with all of your loved ones. Ultimately, how you decide to revel in this milestone should stem from the life that you've built together and the traditions you've established. For example, if you've given a unique gift to your partner on each of your previous anniversaries, continue with that custom for your golden one. However, you may add a special touch to this year's present by selecting something gold for them since the metal is representative of 50 years of marriage. If you two love to travel together, you may opt to book a vacation instead, celebrating your years on a beach—or by taking an adventurous excursion.
Ahead, Kelley Donovan, a licensed clinical social worker, explains the significance of the golden wedding anniversary and offers meaningful ways to celebrate the occasion. Read on for more.
Why Is the Golden Wedding Anniversary Significant?
So much happens in half a century, and if you and your spouse have been married for this amount of time, you’ve built a life together. “If a couple has made it to 50 years, they have gone through a life’s worth of transitions together, such as having children, empty-nesting, retiring, caring for aging parents, and grieving the loss of them,” says Donovan. “These ultra long-term relationships aren’t free from conflict—all couples have conflict, especially during life’s transitions—but a couple that has been together for 50 years probably has what couples therapists call ‘secure attachment.’”
This is something all couples strive to achieve. Having secure attachment means that each partner is accessible, responsive, and engaged, Donovan says. They’ve put in the effort and actively worked on showing up for the relationship, even during life's most challenging moments. “Being there for each other for 50 years is something to be celebrated, maybe even shouted from the rooftops,” Donovan adds. “Secure attachment is a triumph.”
How Many Couples Reach the Golden Anniversary?
If you’re celebrating a golden wedding anniversary, you’re part of an exclusive group. According to research from the U.S. Census Bureau, only six percent of American couples make it to their golden anniversary. This low number makes sense, as couples need to marry young, weather lots of storms, and live fairly long lives in order to achieve this milestone. For example, a couple that married at 25 will need to still be together at 75 in order to hit their golden anniversary. In the U.S., where the average life expectancy hovers around 77 and approximately 40 percent of all marriages end in divorce, that's an accomplishment worth celebrating.

Gift Ideas for the Golden Wedding Anniversary
The traditional gift for the golden wedding anniversary is—as you probably guessed—gold. A rare and precious metal with a pleasing yellow or white luster that is sought after for fine jewelry and other valuables, this material is fitting for an occasion of this magnitude.
While the history of associating gold with the 50th wedding anniversary might have begun in Roman or Medieval times (according to Time), the tradition became more official at the turn of the 20th century, when love marriages became more common and life expectancies increased. (Per customs described by newspapers at the time, wives were given golden wreaths to commemorate the occasion.)

Gold Gifts
If you’d like to celebrate the occasion with a wrapped present, here are a few thematic gift ideas for the golden anniversary:
- A gold stacking band to wear alongside an engagement ring and wedding ring
- A piece of gold jewelry or similar accessory, such as a watch, cufflinks, necklace, or a pair of earrings
- A golden Champagne bucket paired with a crisp bottle of bubbly
- A gold-plated or gold-dipped rose
Experience Gifts
Depending on your and your partner's personal preferences, you may be more interested in commemorating the occasion with an experience rather than a physical gift. “I can think of no better way to celebrate 50 years together than with family, friends, and all the people in the couple’s lives who have supported them and made their bond possible,” says Donovan.
So go on—plan that vow renewal, throw that anniversary party, or gather your nearest and dearest for an intimate dinner and invite them to all give a toast.
