To fans of her 2015 song “Good for You,” Selena Gomez’s dream engagement ring may have seemed obvious. In the track, she sings of a marquise diamond—twice. And while some may chalk up the mention to a necessary rhyme scheme, the actress recently revealed that the shape was in fact her desired look. “Ever since the ‘Good for You’ days—that was, gosh, so many years ago—that’s the diamond I’ve always dreamed of,” the Only Murders in the Building actress told Interview Magazine in a joint interview with Benny Blanco, her fiancé. However, even though Blanco may have nailed the star’s desired cut, the couple recently revealed that Gomez’s preferred design changed halfway through the process. 

In the interview, Blanco said that he would try to drop small hints to the Texas native about the ring over the course of the design process. “I’d be like, ‘Yeah, but if I ever made one, would you want it like this?,’” the record producer said. “And then she changed her mind halfway through. It used to have huge baguettes on the side and then she was like, ‘I don’t want something that big.’” For Gomez, such a design was “too much.” However, even though they didn’t become part of the ring, those spare diamonds are still in Blanco’s possession. “Yeah, so now I have extra baguettes, and we’re going to make earrings for her,” the record executive said. “She basically has three wedding rings.” He also added that he managed the design process entirely on his own, not mentioning his proposal plans to any of his future fiancée’s friends. 

In the aftermath of the duo’s engagement, rumors swirled that it may have happened while they were filming a Taco Bell commercial. And while the couple didn’t provide any more details on how exactly Blanco popped the question, the movie star called it “really sweet.” However, even though the “Love You Like a Love Song” singer was pleasantly surprised, the two revealed that the moments leading up to the engagement were a bit more contentious. Blanco said Gomez started to get suspicious when he wasn’t coming home, which almost resulted in him proposing earlier than intended. 

The duo also shared some details about the start of their love story. While Gomez’s mother was the one who initially set up a meeting between the two years ago, it took them being in the recording studio together for romantic feelings to develop. And while the singer was the one who had a crush first, Blanco said he quickly knew the actress was the one for him. “The second we started hanging out, I was like, ‘This is my wife,’” he said. “I was telling my mom, ‘This is the girl I’m going to marry.’” After getting engaged in December, the wedding planning has only just begun for the pair. When asked if they plan on hosting a destination affair, Gomez said that they hadn’t gotten to that point in the process. “But I don’t know,” she added. “That might be hard for family.” However, even if they don’t know where they plan to say “I do,” there are some customs that the two know will be a part of the celebration. While Gomez doesn’t plan to convert to Judaism for Blanco, they still plan to partake in the hora, a traditional Jewish dance, at their reception.
