Presence Over Performance

The concept of prioritising presence over performance on your wedding day is something that instantly lights my heart, so this editorial felt special from the very start. It has been created by a team who share that intention and who wanted to make wedding inspiration that feels sincere and human. Work that carries real feeling without leaning on spectacle. Work that lets people be themselves.

Ross Willshire led the photography and his way of working shaped the atmosphere for everyone involved. He gives the couple space, pays attention to the moment they are in and follows their natural pace rather than directing them into something that is not theirs. The rest of the team carried that intention into the florals, fashion, vow books, accessories and our darling recommended celebrant, Jamie Walker, bought her warmth and beautiful and welcoming smile to the ceremonial scenes.

Although this is a styled shoot, the team made a conscious decision to work with a real couple, Mike and Abi, knowing their connection would bring a beautiful authenticity to this project and you most sincerely can feel that choice throughout these lovely images.

Thank you so much to the creative team fully credited at the end of this article for sharing their work – it sits beautifully longside the thoughts I recently shared in my Disconnected essay, and give me great pleasure to share.

This shoot was inspired by couples who value presence over performance and those who care more about emotional resonance than putting on an act or performing for the camera. From the personalised vow books, painterly florals, every choice was made with a feeling of intimacy and understated beauty in mind. I love the phrase ‘quiet luxury’ because it alludes to a sense of celebration and love that isn’t loud or boastful but still indulgent and refined.

Style-wise we focussed on bringing a more fashion-forward city aesthetic to this classic English countryside venue. The tablescape felt like an intimate dinner at home, just with the dial turned up ever so gently. Every detail whispered luxury, but in a way that felt accessible, human and deeply personal.

The Venue & Flowers

An enchanting 12th Century former gatehouse, Butley Priory in Suffolk is renowned for hosting intimate three day weddings with accommodation for up to 47 guests across four characterful properties on the Estate.

The Priory’s beautiful architecture provided a backdrop of vaulted ceilings, stone columns, arches and soaring gothic windows. Combined with its pale white-washed walls and natural stone colours, the setting was the perfect choice for this high fashion, city-style shoot.

Walk around the Butley garden in May, and you’ll find the Wisteria in full bloom and willows gently swaying in the breeze. Once inside, step into the prettiest secret bar for cocktails – filled with even more architectural wonders…

With regards to the florals, I wanted to encapsulate luxury with a modern edge, but also stay true to my signature wild and organic aesthetic. I used a soft, neutral palette of blooms with dark green foliage for a timeless, romantic yet understated look. The thoughtful placements of winding Tulip stems to introduce movement , airy and whimsical Cow Parsley and blousy Ranunculus created arrangements that quietly elevated the beautiful setting of Butley Priory alongside the styling by the talented Ayers Event Hire.

The Groom’s Attire

We had originally connected with a UK-based African wedding suit design company but sadly they let us down at the last minute.  Out groom was dressed in an off-white ASOS suit and vest top which complemented Cynthia’s Darcy bridal suit perfectly.

We wanted to step away from the traditional tuxedo look and show how style can be both accessible and about how your wear an outfit as opposed to simply the label attached to it.

What was most important to us that Mike felt comfortable and that the outfit accentuated and detracted from his natural sense of style and good looks.

I had the pleasure of taking part in this recent luxury-styled wedding shoot, where I brought my signature warmth, authenticity, and modern celebrant style to a beautifully curated setting. Surrounded by stunning details and a talented team of industry professionals, I helped bring the ceremony vision to life, showcasing how a personalised, heartfelt celebration can elevate any wedding-luxury or intimate. It was an incredible opportunity to highlight the role of a celebrant in creating meaningful, memorable moments that truly reflect each couple’s unique story.

Following Ross’s brief for the Burley Priory shoot I selected Glorious by Heidi wedding accessories that I felt echoed Ross’s vision of intimacy and quiet luxury.  The JOANIE long crystal chain earrings, with their dramatic sparkle and fluid movement, bring a fashion forward edge whilst still feeling perfectly at home in the elegant, historic setting.

To balance that drama, the CHLOE mini crystal bows in our model’s naturally curly, short hair, bring a softer romance. The versatility of hair pins in bridal hair styling also appealed, allowing our hairstylist the opportunity to layer up the look, dialling the intensity of the styling up or down as required. Together, the I feel the pieces create a dialogue of strength and delicacy, underscoring the shoot’s intention: to capture love in its most authentic, stylish, and quietly luxurious form.

I wanted Abi’s hair and makeup to reflect the modern, fashion-forward, luxurious feel of the shoot, whilst still keeping things natural. For her makeup I wanted to enhance, not mask so I focused on bringing out her natural features, adding a touch of smokiness to her eyes and a pop of blusher on her cheeks.

For her hair, I wanted her natural texture to be the focus so I let that shine but added in some twists for some extra detail, that paired perfectly with the accessories we were using for the shoot.

For this shoot I created a full stationery suite to complement the elegant black and white theme- from invitations and table stationery right through to vow books and a fabric welcome sign. I wanted everything to feel timeless and pared back, with little details that spoke to the idea of quiet luxury. The focus was really on intimacy and connection, so I kept the designs clean and minimal, letting the elegant typeface and thoughtful finishes do all the talking.

The cake – an arresting two-tiered composition contrasting softness and structure, tradition and edge. It sets the mood; classy yet intimate. The creative use of edible wafer paper gives an impossibly romantic and ethereal aesthetic with the light providing additional softness through the florals. The texture invites touch whilst the intricacy invites pause. Dramatic but never loud.  Every detail a reflection of the couple’s story; elegant, expressive, and entirely their own.
