Hopefully if you're reading this, it's because you've found and booked your fabulous wedding photographer (hurrah!), and you're in the throes of getting to know each other and figuring out what you want from your wedding photos. We highly recommend creating a photo checklist of shots your photographer absolutely has to get (you and your favourite aunty, etc!), but also don't be afraid to have a little fun and get creative.

To inspire you, we've been looking through our real weddings, Pinterest boards and Instagram feed, for cute new photo ideas for you and your photographer to capture on your wedding day. In this post, we've gathered 23 special wedding photo ideas, from fun and silly to sentimental tearjerkers, all of which never fail to make us smile. Let's take a look through the lens...

1. Fine Detail Flatlay

The finer details deserve as much attention on your wedding day as the big ticket items, after all, they are your future heirlooms. Gather your rings, jewellery, fragrance and beloved shoes together, along with some extra frills to dress the set up. Ribbon, flowers, petals, and even your stationery suite all work well for this.

2. First Look Photo: The Couple

This one falls firmly into the tearjerker photo category. A first look photo is for the couple who want to skip the big reveal at the altar, and instead have a private moment before the ceremony. There are so many pros to a first look, the main one, of course, is capturing the emotional moment where you set eyes on each other, just before you tie the knot.

It's also great for couples who suffer from stage fright. Another major bonus to choosing a first look is that having your couple photos taken pre-ceremony, means more time in the afternoon to enjoy with your guests.

3. First Look Photo: Anyone Else

A first look photo doesn't just have to be between the couple. We've seen it between a bride and her father, and even grandfather and grandmother, the bride and her bridesmaids, the groom and the flowergirl, the groom and his groomsmen, the bride and the groomsmen, a couple and their children... honestly, the list is as long as the people you love.

4. The First Touch Photo

Just like the first look, the first touch photo happens before the ceremony, but the difference is, no peeking. This allows you to spend a special moment together before you take to the aisle, maybe even exchange letter, and the results are heart-melting. For the musical couple, why not sing or play a musical instrument for your loved one before your ceremony from a behind a door?

5. Letter & Gift Exchange

Amidst the madness of wedding morning prep, receiving a letter or gift from your other half is opportunity to pause and reflect on your releationship and what's to come. It's such an emotional moment, and one that should be captured, whether you chose to read it out loud to your bridal party or take time to yourself. If you're incuding a gift exchange, gift your partner with a sentimental or funny keepsake that you know they'll love. You won't be there to see them open it, but you'll still get to see the look on their face afterwards.

6. Streetstyle Vibes

One of the best things about having a city wedding or civil ceremony is that you can make the most of the urban backdrop. Whether it's murals and grafitti popping in the background or iconic buildings, adopt a candidly cool pose for some delightfully louche results. This one works just as well in country towns too, which can be full of character. The key is to interact with your surroundings, and the people you meet - grab a pint, an ice cream, a dog - the more real the better.

7. Colourful Confetti Toss

Spread some cheer with a celebratory confetti toss! So what's the trick to nailing the perfect shot? The more the better we say! Delegate a guest to gather everyone in a tunnel, ensure everyone grabs a good fist full of environmentally friendly petals or biodegradable tissue, and other sustainable confetti options and on your photographer's count glide your way through the shower of confetti love.

8. Less Posing, More Fun!

Not a fan of posed photography - don't worry! Many couples get a few posed shots in the bag (or don't bother at all!) and then move swiftly on to fun, alternative, shots that are more candid and relaxed in style. Your photographer will most likely check out your venue in advance and suss out fun spots or unique focal points, so chat to them about their ideas. You can also never go wrong with fun props such as sunglasses, custom jackets, and even transport.

9. The Hollywood Flash

Direct flash photography is most easily described as a flashed shot aimed directly at the subject - think paparazzi! This is perfect for a Hollywood glam wedding theme - bright, structured and very modern looking. This style works best at night, allowing for more candid, laidback and creative shots to happen.

10. The Champagne Shot

There's something ever so Gatsby about the Champagne shot. Whether it's a glamorous champagne tower, which FYI is a great alternative to a 'cutting the cake' shot', or you and your partner could shake up a bottle of bubbly and leave it pop. This will be a serious bougie photo to share with the grandkids!

11. Pets Please!

For many couples, having their loved ones around them on their special day absolutely, positively has to include the fur baby - and maybe even your horse! Many venues recognise the importance of allowing your dog to be part of your wedding celebration and are increasingly more flexible about helping make this happen. Naturally this makes for mega photo opportunities with your four-legged friends. Cute outfits optional (but highly recommended!).

12. Smoke Bombs Away

A smoking hot trend that will inject a burst of colour into your wedding photos is smoke bombs or smoke flares. These are a whole lot of fun, and create seriously atmospheric shots, but ensure you check with your venue first before setting them off and read our post on How to Use Smoke Bombs.

13. The Long Exposure

This is such a beautiful photo effect, and a really fun one for winter weddings when it gets dark early and daylight is limited. All you need is some willing pals to whizz around you with sparklers while you stand stock still in each others arms. Simple!

14. The Wedding Cast

This one is all about attitude and character. Major points to your bridal party if they manage to keep a straight face. Think Royal Family meets blockbuster movie poster. Yes, it's the A-list cast of The Wedding Day, starring you and your other half.

Romantic, cinematic shots of the couple making their getaway in a statement vehicle — from vintage classics to quirky or luxe cars. Think driving away, leaning out the window or sharing a kiss through the windshield for that perfect storybook moment.

16. The Record Cover

How creative is this? Such an easy shot to recreate - all you need is a portrait image record sleeve. You decide on the style. If you can't get your hands on a record, why not try a magazine cover? A simple prop, with an epic result!

17. The Sparkler Send Off

One of our favourite wedding photo ideas! Sparkler send-offs are by far an amazing night time moment to end your very special day. Have all your guests take a sparkler (here's where to find them!) and create a tunnel for you and your partner to walk through - we promise you the results will be incredible!

18. The Last Dance

You are familiar with a first dance, but what about a last dance? Create an intimate and private moment with your partner and finish your amazing night with a final dance of the night, just the two of you. So special, and even more romantic!

19. The Generations Kiss

If you are lucky enough to have both your parents and both your grandparents at your wedding (and they are still a couple) why not honour their love as well as yours with all three generations kissing. Place your grandparents in front, followed by your parents and you in the back.

20. The Reception Reveal

Before the music starts and the room fills with your favourite people, take a moment to see your reception space for the first time, completely empty. Capture your reaction as you take in all those details you’ve spent months planning — the flowers, tablescapes, candles and little personal touches. It’s a fleeting moment, but one you’ll love looking back on.

21. The Foodie Moments

They might not be the most glamorous shots, but you’ll love them when you look back! From grabbing a sneaky pint on the way to the ceremony or a post-ceremony takeaway, to late-night pizza, chips or a cheeky snack between dances, capture the fun food moments that fuel your wedding day. These candid snaps are all part of the story — and often the ones that make you smile most.

22. Interactive Cake

Looking for a fresh twist on the traditional cake cutting? From messy but fun cake pours and candle-covered cakes to slice-and-serve sheet cakes like tiramisu and the traditional Italian wedding cake, the Millfoglie (which couples are invited to sprinkle icing sugar over before slicing), it’s all about making your cake moment feel fun, relaxed and uniquely you.

23. The Late-Night After-Party

When the formalities are over and the party really gets going, grab a few late-night shots of the after-party chaos. Think your second look, a dramatic entrance back into the reception, packed dancefloor, blurry flash photography, midnight snacks and all those wonderfully unfiltered moments that happen when everyone has let loose.
