Key Takeaways

  • Many of Princess Diana's most memorable looks and pieces from her personal collection are currently up for auction.
  • The sale, which is hosted by Julien's Auctions, starts on Thursday, June 26.
  • Some of the pieces include holiday cards, wedding memorabilia, and sketches of her most well-known ensembles.

Over the course of her lifetime, Princess Diana donned a number of different ensembles. From the announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles on February 24, 1981, to her tragic death on August 31, 1997, the royal featured an array of different designers through her looks, including David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the duo behind her engagement blouse and wedding dress, and Catherine Walker, a French creative who produced thousands of pieces for Diana. And while it's been almost 30 years since Diana's death, a number of her outfits—and the sketches behind them—are currently for sale as part of "Princess Diana's Style & A Royal Collection." The sale, which is hosted by Julien's Auctions, will begin on Thursday, June 26, at The Peninsula Beverly Hills.

In addition to these unforgettable pieces, the auction also features a number of engagement-, wedding-, and honeymoon-related items. Below, we break down the stories behind four of the most significant lots.

Princess Diana's Engagement Items

Before Diana and Charles tied the knot at Westminster Abbey, the couple announced their future plans in an interview with the BBC at Buckingham Palace. To share the news, Diana donned an off-the-rack blue suit from Harrods. However, at the same time, a shot of the princess-to-be was also taken by Lord Snowdon—and featured in Vogue. In this picture, which was also considered her engagement portrait, Diana wore a blouse designed by Elizabeth Emanuel. While the piece itself sold for $381,000 in a previous auction, a sketch of it is currently estimated to sell for $2,000 to $3,000 as part of the June 2025 sale.

The sale also includes a black silk taffeta gown, designed by Emanuel, that ultimately inspired the neckline of Diana's wedding dress. The former played such a role in the creation of the latter that it's even called the "Sister Gown," due to the similarities between the two pieces. "Emanuel took note of Diana's preference for the gown's neckline and replicated a modest V-cut for the world-famous wedding gown," the listing reads. The royal reportedly tried on the dress as an option for her first official appearance following her engagement. And while she ultimately opted for a different design, the impact of this particular piece was clear. As part of the sale, it's expected to sell for between $20,000 and $40,000.

Pieces Tied to the Wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana

While you may not be able to bid on the royal's wedding-day ensemble, a swatch of her veil is available as part of the sale. "This is a tulle swatch offset from Princess Diana's wedding veil, which was made by Heathcoat Triverton, an English weaving factory," the listing reads. The piece is estimated to sell for $400 to $600. Other nuptial-related items from the duo's big day are also listed as part of the auction, including a booklet documenting the schedule for the ceremony, a commemorative goblet featuring the newlyweds' faces, and a collection of souvenirs and ephemera.

Princess Diana's Honeymoon Ensemble

After Diana and Charles said "I do," they set off on their honeymoon aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. For their departure, the princess wore a custom John Boyd peach-colored hat, which is now part of the auction. "The hat was custom-made to match Princess Diana's Belville Sassoon peach-pink-colored skirt suits, which featured alternating jackets: one with long sleeves and one with short sleeves," the listing reads. The accessory is estimated to sell for $20,000 to $40,000.
