Madeleine's Daughter Bridal: Portsmouth, New Hampshire

1 year ago 130

In the five decades since the original “Madeleine’s daughter” opened her eponymous bridal boutique in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the shop has helped generations of New England brides select their wedding dresses. When that first daughter eventually retired, bridal stylist Elizbeth Dirom, who had joined the company in 1995, stepped up as the shop's new owner, maintaining both the name and the store's reputation for thoughtful service and gorgeous gowns

The boutique's current team of expert stylists offers each bride individualized attention with one-on–one consultations. The shop employs what it calls a "closed-concept" approach: Brides discuss their likes and dislikes, provide inspiration images, and let the consultants browse the racks to choose prospective dresses. “Our stylists are experts in silhouette, fabric, trend, and fit, so the bride is free to immerse herself in the experience and discover the gown that doesn't just look beautiful, but feels undeniably her," says bridal director Lauren. “Wedding dress shopping is a rare and special milestone. We want our brides to be fully present, to explore all their options, and most importantly—to celebrate!”

Wedding dress shopping is a rare and special milestone. We want our brides to be fully present, to explore all their options, and most importantly—to celebrate!

Madeleine’s Daughter’s extensive collection of nearly two dozen diverse bridalwear lines includes Anne Barge, Essense of Australia, Martina Liana, Nouvelle Amsale, Paloma Blanca, and Watters. Finding the one that feels right can be an overwhelming experience for brides, says senior stylist Melissa—but gut instinct makes all the difference. “If the gown doesn't feel right within the first moments of wearing it, don't force it by overanalyzing or making excessive customizations,” she says. “You want to find the dress that makes you feel like the most special version of you, not someone else. Remember, you're not pretending to be 'a bride,' you are your very own version of 'bride'!"

For Dirom, who has helped countless brides in her 30 years at the boutique, seeing a bride realize she’s found ‘the one’ is only her second favorite part of the process. “To be honest, there is even more magic when the dress you ordered arrives at the salon and you get to put your dress on for the very first time!” she says. “Often you get to relive the moments and feelings you experienced from when you said yes to the dress, but it's your dress! Typically, the time frame is closer to the wedding date and so there is excitement and a sense of reality that is so palpable. It's magical to me!"
