High School Sweethearts Created an Unforgettable Experience at Luna Escondida in San Miguel de Allende

22 hours ago 9

A hand-painted dance floor, a surprise saxophonist, custom slippers for late-night dancing, and a welcome party complete with mariachi, churros, and maracas were all part of Alexandra and Luke’s wedding weekend in San Miguel de Allende. With many guests traveling for the occasion, the couple planned beyond the wedding day, giving everyone time to eat, dance, and explore a city they wanted to share with the people closest to them.

Their wedding at Luna Escondida used rich shades of green, burgundy, plum, blush, and ivory alongside the property’s architecture and landscape. Alexandra wore a hand-painted silk gown and veil, while details ranging from a coffee and matcha bar to silk scarves illustrated with scenes from San Miguel gave guests plenty to discover throughout the day.

What We Love About This Luna Escondida Wedding:

  • Alexandra’s hand-painted silk Danielle Frankel gown and veil
  • A hand-painted dance floor created for the reception
  • Custom silk scarves featuring San Miguel de Allende
  • A private communion shared by Alexandra and Luke during the ceremony
  • A surprise saxophonist who joined the reception dance floor

Growing Up Together Before Spending Four Years Long Distance

Alexandra and Luke’s history goes back much further than high school. They first met in kindergarten at six years old, grew up together, and eventually started dating as teenagers. By the time they married, they had been together for more than seven years.

Four of those years were spent long distance while they attended different colleges. Through childhood, high school, college, and all the changes that came with them, being together remained the constant.

“Growing up together was incredibly special because we got to know each other through so many different stages of life,” they shared. “We watched each other grow, change, and become the people we are today.”

Finding Different Outfits for Each Part of the Wedding Weekend

For Alexandra, having several events meant an opportunity to explore more than one bridal attire. “There are so many different styles that I loved and wanted to wear, so getting to find special looks for each part of our wedding weekend was so much fun!” she said.

She chose Rachel Gilbert for the rehearsal dinner, wearing a dress covered in hand-sewn sequins and beads. Her wedding-day look took a different direction: a hand-painted silk dress by Danielle Frankel paired with a cathedral veil finished with a lace border.

Choosing a Venue They Could Enhance Instead of Completely Redesign

Finding the venue came first in the planning process. Once Alexandra and Luke chose Luna Escondida, they were introduced to Lucero Álvarez Wedding Agency, whose team helped them build the rest of their vendor lineup.

The property already had much of what they were looking for. They envisioned an elegant wedding with organic, natural elements and a layered palette of green, burgundy, plum, blush, and ivory. Instead of starting with a blank space, they could work with the character that was already there.

“We loved that Luna Escondida already had so much character and beauty of its own, which allowed us to enhance the space rather than transform it completely,” the couple explained.

Lucero and her team also connected them with an entirely Mexico-based vendor team. Trust and transparency mattered when choosing who to work with, but Alexandra and Luke also gave their vendors room to contribute their own expertise and ideas.

Welcoming Traveling Guests With a Rooftop Dinner and Mariachi

With guests making the trip to San Miguel de Allende, Alexandra and Luke put considerable thought into the time everyone would spend together outside the wedding itself.

The night before the ceremony began with a rooftop rehearsal dinner at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende for their closest family and friends. After dinner, the festivities picked up with mariachi, churros, guacamole, and maracas.

The couple also wanted the weekend to introduce guests to San Miguel rather than simply use the city as a location. That idea showed up again later in the custom pieces they created for the wedding day.

Sharing Communion Privately During the Ceremony

Alexandra and Luke’s ceremony included a quieter moment reserved for the two of them. They shared communion privately, prayed together, and spent time in worship before continuing with the day.

“The most memorable part was sharing communion privately together,” they said. “We got to pray together and spend time in worship, centering our marriage on God and the commitment we were making to one another.”

Creating Custom Keepsakes Inspired by San Miguel de Allende

Some of Alexandra and Luke’s most distinctive ideas appeared once guests reached the reception. A hand-painted dance floor became part of the party space, while a coffee and matcha bar gave guests another stop during the evening. Gift bags included slippers bearing the couple’s wedding monogram, ready to swap in once dancing was underway.

They also created a silk scarf highlighting San Miguel de Allende alongside playful references to the wedding weekend, plus a tambourine featuring their wedding logo. The pieces weren’t all variations of the same favor. Some were made for the dance floor, some referenced the destination, and others simply gave guests something fun to use during the party.

Bringing a Surprise Saxophonist Into the Reception

Later in the reception, saxophonist Javier Cavacini made an unannounced appearance.

Guests hadn’t been expecting him, and he joined the party in the middle of the reception, bringing his saxophone directly into the action on the dance floor. Alexandra and Luke remember the sudden burst of energy as one of the night’s standout moments.

After a weekend that had already included mariachi, maracas, and custom tambourines, there was plenty of room for one more instrument.

Surrounding Themselves With People They Trusted

When Alexandra and Luke talk about wedding planning advice, they come back to the people they had around them. Their families supported them through the process, while Lucero and the planning team helped coordinate the many moving pieces involved in a destination wedding.

“My biggest advice would be to surround yourself with people you trust and who truly understand your vision,” Alexandra shared. “Having a team that you can rely on and who helps bring your ideas to life is such a blessing throughout the wedding planning process.”

For Alexandra and Luke, that support gave them more room to enjoy the months leading up to the wedding as well as the weekend they had spent so long planning.
