How do you feel about planning a Day Two of your wedding? Is it something you relish or do you consider it as just more stress and expense and (yet) another thing to think about, and don't want to feel obliged? When we asked the question in this year's wedding survey, 44% of you said you will be having a second day celebration, so this is clearly almost a 50:50 situation, and might even be a divisive one.

Your wedding is going to be one of the most fun and exciting days of your life, so we don't blame you for wanting to keep the party going - and for your friends and family will be thanking you for it! But by that same token, we also have no judgements if you want to focus all your time and energy on the main event. While plans for the day after your wedding are not essential, lots of couples love a next day event as they are often a great way to squeeze in extra quality time with your guests, and a bit like a rehearsal dinner, they also come with so much less expecation than your big day. But by the same token it does add more planning - as well as budget - to your wedding, so this is not a decision to be taken on board lightly.

Let's look at some of the pros and cons...

Pros of Having a Day Two

  • You get to spend more time with friends and family: Your wedding day will no doubt whizz by (everyone says this!), and a second day lets you actually slow down for a while and talk to friends and family, especially those guests who have traveled from far away.
  • You get to replay the memories: We love the idea that there is more time to reflect on the day before, share stories, open gifts and generally have a great de-brief of it all. It also gives a second chance for those who missed connecting at the reception to catch up and bond.
  • There's Less Pressure: Unlike the main event, a Day Two has no strict itineraries, formal speeches or heavy pressure to look or act a specific way.
  • Casual Vibe: You can keep it low-key at a local pub, a barbeque in your back garden, a picnic at the beach or a casual brunch.
  • Extended Celebration: It gives you more time to enjoy music, entertainment or unwind with your new spouse while keeping all your nearest and dearest close to you.

Cons of Having a Day Two

  • Extra Cost: Renting a second venue space, buying more food and drinks, or hiring casual entertainment (like a DJ or acoustic musician) adds to the overall budget
  • Guest Fatigue: Some guests, especially older family members or those with hangovers, may feel obligated or too tired to attend a second full day of socialising, so there might be drop-offs.
  • Travel and Logistical Strain: Guests may need to extend their hotel stays, rent cars longer or take extra days off work.
  • More Planning Stress: Even though it is meant to be relaxed, organising food, a venue, and attendance for a second day still demands energy when you just want to rest up or get ready to head off on honeymoon.
A venue such as Slane Castle may not have facilities for multi day weddings but can arrange a Day Two at their sister venue, Rock Farm Slane

Key Steps to Planning a Day Two

Set a loose start time: Give guests a clear arrival time, but skip a fixed end time so people can come and go as they wish.

Choose a casual format: Pick a laid-back style like a backyard BBQ, a low-key pub gathering, or a recovery brunch buffet.

Skip the formalities: Leave out rigid itineraries, speeches, and formal seating charts to let the atmosphere unfold naturally.

Invite an extended circle: Use the second day to welcome neighbors, coworkers or additional friends who missed the main ceremony

Popular Day Two Ideas:

1. The Recovery BBQ or Pizza Party

This is one of the most popular day after wedding ideas for a reason! There's no safer bet for a next-day shindig than a laid-back afternoon of food, drink and banter, maybe with a few lawn games and an epic Spotify playlist thrown in for good measure.

2. Head to the Local Pub

Many couples end up going for the day after 'do that puts the least amount of pressure on guests, which is where the humble brunch or pub lunch comes in. Believe us, when the day after your wedding rolls around, you'll be glad that mimosas and Eggs Benedict, or an elaborate roast dinner and a pint, are on the menu!completely different, like a late-afternoon Indian!

3. Try an Outdoor Game

If you think your crew would appreciate a round of golf or mini golf, a spot of archery or a paintballing tournament (or even a Guess Who on the lawn), the day after your wedding is a great time to revisit an old hobby or try something new. Other candidates include pitch and putt, croquet, clay pigeon shooting, horseriding, fishing and water sports. If you're really adventurous, you could try bungee jumping, paragliding or skydiving. We've also seen an old fashioned sports days, complete with sack races. See our post with fabulous lawn games ideas here.

4. Head Off on an Outdoor Excursion

We've seen a few couples hop on the Christmas Day Swim bandwagon and organise a dip in the sea for the day after their wedding, which we think is a really lovely (if very chilly!) idea. You could also plan a countryside hike or a bracing walk.

5. Plan a Perfect Picnic

An outdoor feast on the grass is an adorable way to pass an afternoon, and this should work the day after your wedding, regardless of where your venue is. If you're in the countryside, the venue might have a lawn that's perfect for a picnic, or be able to recommend a picturesque site nearby. In the city, simply pack your baskets and hit your favourite park.
