We’re not gonna lie, we’ve had some fun researching this one! Signature wedding cocktails have become a mainstay at receptions, giving couples a brilliant way to add a little personality to their drinks menu. While the trend may have made its way over from the US, Irish and UK couples have well and truly made it their own.

From putting a personal twist on a classic to creating a completely custom cocktail from scratch, there are so many ways to make your wedding drink feel uniquely yours. Have fun with the flavours, colours and, of course, the name! You can give your cocktail a playful name, tie it into your wedding theme or destination, or keep things simple with a timeless favourite. They’re also a great alternative to the usual champagne or prosecco, and can look seriously pretty served on the bar or drinks tray.

From the cocktails we’re spotting time and again in our Real Weddings and across our social feeds, these are 12 of the most popular wedding cocktails right now.

Top Tips for Serving Custom Wedding Cocktails

  • Choose something you genuinely love. Don’t choose a cocktail just because it’s trendy. Your signature drink should be something you and your friends will actually enjoy drinking. Whether it’s a classic Aperol Spritz, a proper Old Fashioned or something with a personal connection, taste should come first.
  • Think about how easy it is to make. This is particularly important if you’re serving cocktails to a large crowd. Drinks that can be pre-batched or prepared quickly are much more practical than cocktails that need to be individually shaken, stirred or garnished for every guest.
  • Test, test, test! Have a proper trial before the big day, and make sure you’re happy with the recipe, proportions and presentation. If you’re creating your own signature cocktail, this is your chance to tweak it until it’s exactly right.
  • Check with your venue or caterer. Before you fall in love with a particular cocktail, check that your venue or caterer is happy to serve it. They may have restrictions around outside alcohol, ingredients or glassware, and there could be an additional charge for cocktail service.
  • Make sure the bar team knows the recipe. If your cocktail isn’t one of the bar’s usual offerings, give the team plenty of notice and make sure everyone knows exactly how it should be made. Ideally, do a test run with the person who’ll actually be serving it. Because nobody wants to order their signature cocktail and discover it’s nothing like the one they tasted!
  • Keep the ingredient list manageable. The more ingredients a cocktail needs, the more complicated and expensive it can become. A few good-quality ingredients will usually make a better drink than a long list of obscure additions, particularly when you’re catering for a crowd.
  • Think about the season. A refreshing spritz or citrusy cocktail is perfect for a summer wedding, while richer drinks like an Old Fashioned, Bramble or Whiskey Sour can work beautifully for autumn and winter celebrations. You’ll also want to think about how the drink will hold up if it’s being served outdoors.
  • Don’t forget the non-drinkers. Consider offering a mocktail version of your signature cocktail, or another really good alcohol-free option. It means everyone gets to enjoy the fun of having a special drink, rather than simply being handed a soft drink.
  • Make it look the part. Wedding cocktails can be a gorgeous addition to your styling, so think about the glassware, garnish, straws, napkins and even the cocktail name. A beautiful drink on a tray or behind the bar can become part of the décor in its own right.
  • Don’t underestimate the quantities. If you’re offering cocktails during the drinks reception, think about how many you realistically expect guests to have and make sure there’s enough to go around. It’s also worth having plenty of your other drinks options available so guests aren’t limited to the signature cocktail.
  • Make it clear what’s on offer. Don’t leave your signature cocktail hiding behind the bar! Use a pretty menu, bar sign or drinks station display to let guests know what’s available, and include the cocktail’s key ingredients so they know exactly what they’re ordering, particularly if there are any allergens or spirits they’d prefer to avoid.
