'Tis almost the season to get cosy and rewatching your witchy favourites. And with Halloween the next holiday on the horizon which spooky, celestial and magical favourites are on your list? Some of our fellow colleagues in the Evoke office have seen the new Practical Magic movie - review here - and it got us thinking about quotes for a ceremony from the original movie, which was actually an adaptation from the wonderful 1995 book by Alice Hoffman.

The original story centres on the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, who belong to a long line of witches. They carry a generational curse: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to a premature death!

The primary romance focuses on Sally Owens (played by Sandra Bullock) finding true love with Detective Gary Hallet, a relationship that directly challenges and ultimately breaks her family's fatal love curse. As a young girl, Sally casts an impossible "Amas Veritas" spell to protect her heart. She lists highly specific, impossible traits for her future lover (e.g., one green eye and one blue eye, able to flip pancakes in the air) believing such a man could never exist. When Gary arrives years later, he matches every single criteria, proving they are literally destined for one another.

Meanwhile, Gillian Owens’ (played by Nicole Kidman) romantic arc is defined by toxic passion, a dark supernatural haunting and a journey toward healing and finding genuine love...
