Key Takeaways

  • A bride’s wedding day was disrupted when her mother-in-law screamed at her for starting without late grandparents.
  • The mother-in-law’s behavior escalated, including yelling at guests and bringing up decades-old family drama.
  • The couple decided to cut ties with the mother-in-law after her actions ruined their wedding and caused lasting hurt.

No matter how many times you tell yourself that the only thing that matters on your wedding day is tying the knot with the person you love most in the world, there will probably be a few things that threaten your peace. A bride on Reddit’s peace was shattered altogether, however, when her mother-in-law went into what she called a full “tail spin” on the big wedding day. She detailed the groom’s mother's unhinged behavior, which culminated in her screaming in her face over the fact that she had started the ceremony without her son’s grandparents present, on the platform’s “AITAH” thread.

Titling her post, “AITAH for cutting off my in-laws for ruining my wedding day?,” the bride started her story by nothing that her mother-in-law was in a poor mood from the moment she arrived at her home, where the event was taking place; she was apparently already feuding with her husband for coming home late (and drunk) and immediately started in on her son, saying things like, “You don’t appreciate anything I did for you.” The bride, who was tucked away getting ready, didn’t realize the extent of the woman’s behavior, which escalated in the hours before the ceremony. “She was being hateful and mean to my husband and they pretty much argued that entire time,” she later learned.

It all came to a head directly after the duo’s ceremony and family photos, when the mother of the groom got in her and other’s faces for starting the service without two very special guests: the groom’s grandparents, who arrived 20 minutes too late. “MIL loses it on me and my husband for not waiting for them. They knew what time to be there,” she wrote. “I tried to explain [that] I didn’t know they weren’t there and my MIL never asked me, or my husband, if we could wait a little longer or we would have. Again, I was getting ready and did not know they were not there. That is relevant.”

Despite doing her best to placate and deescalate the situation, her mother-in-law spiraled into other unsavory topics. “Screaming at people in their faces, cussing out my brother for not waiting, cussing out my mom because ‘she didn’t help or pay for anything,’ cussing out my dad for not telling her 40-plus years ago that my FIL cheated on her (my dad, MIL, and FIL were all best friends their whole lives),” the bride details. “Lastly, she comes and screams at me for not waiting. She does all of this within 20 to 30 minutes. So me, my husband, our kids, and the rest of my family leave. We didn't come back and they didn't try to talk to us that night.”

The bride and her husband returned to their home the following day to get to the bottom of the meltdown—which only resulted in more vitriol spewed from the groom’s mom. “At this point, I lose my temper [and yell] at her that what she did was unforgivable,” the woman wrote. “My husband and I are united in that we are so hurt and betrayed by her actions. We have cut almost all contact, but still let them see their granddaughter because they never have done anything to her.”

She then opened the floor to Reddit, asking if cutting her in-laws out of their lives after they wrecked their wedding was an unfair thing to do—and the community swiftly reaffirmed her actions. One user even gave her a word-for-word script to use the next time her mother-in-law attempts to make contact: “Let me be very clear, so you don’t make the mistake of trying to rugsweep or blow off what you did. You hatefully and intentionally wrecked our wedding. Your non-apologies will never be accepted, and there is no coming back from being that vile. Remember our wedding as the day you ruined our relationship. You chose this.”
