The cost of being a member of a wedding party can add up quickly, especially if it's a destination wedding or you're asked to travel for a bachelorette trip or bridal shower.
That was the experience of one Redditor, who was a bridesmaid in her friend's wedding but couldn’t afford the bachelorette trip to Las Vegas. "I’ve been upfront about my financial situation for months," she wrote.
The bride said that she understood, but then later replaced the Redditor as a bridesmaid, saying that they weren't showing up for her. "I didn’t know friendship was measured in flight points and bottle service," the Redditor wrote. "I am sorry that I am too broke to spend $3,000 on your wedding."
Hundreds of people have commented on the Reddit post, offering their opinions on the situation. Most commenters side with the original poster, saying the bride wasn't a real friend to begin with. "She did you a favor, just look at it that way. Her actions speak louder than her words ever could," one wrote.
Some even suggested that the poster avoid the wedding completely: "Save yourself ALL the money and RSVP no. Life’s too short to hold onto friendships with awful people," another commenter said.
Others lamented the rising costs of being a wedding party member. "Thinking your bridal party has all that cash to drop, in addition to the price of being an attendant (dress, shoes, hair, makeup, travel, bridal shower, and gifts) is crazy to me," one wrote.
"This is why it's so important for brides to communicate expectations and costs before asking someone to be in the role," another poster commented. "I can't imagine expecting someone to pay $3,000 just for a bachelorette. I'd rather host my own slumber party-style bachelorette party than dump the cost to my girls."
