Charity Shops for Pre-Loved Wedding Dresses

Charity shops are a fantastic place to find your dream dress while supporting a good cause. And it doesn’t necessarily mean buying pre-worn: many stock unworn samples donated by bridal boutiques.

You can find bridal gowns in charity shops around the country, while some have dedicated bridal sections with private fitting areas. Many also stock vintage dresses, bridesmaid and flower girl dresses, plus accessories such as veils, tiaras and shoes. Advice for Buying a Pre-Loved Dress

• Dream big: If you have a dream wedding dress in mind but it's out of your price range, don't despair. Gather as much info on the dress as you can - the designer, season style number, name of dress etc. and try to track it down (stalk it!) online (using the links above). You never know, you could get extremely lucky and find *the one *for a fraction of the original price. If you don't try, you will never know.
• Keep an open mind: Pre-loved doesn't always mean heavily worn. Many dresses have only been worn once, while others are unworn samples or showroom pieces. That said, expect some signs of wear and factor in cleaning or alterations if needed.
• Know your measurements: Don't rely on the label size alone, as bridal sizing varies hugely between designers. Ask for the dress's exact measurements and compare them with your own before buying.
• Search beyond your size: If a dress is slightly too big, it may be possible to alter it down, whereas taking a dress up several sizes can be much more difficult. A good seamstress can advise on what's realistic.
• Ask questions: If you're buying directly from a seller, ask about how many times the dress has been worn, whether it's been professionally cleaned, what alterations have been made and whether there is any damage, staining or missing details. Find out a little history.
• Ask about alterations: Find out exactly what alterations have been made, whether they were done professionally, and whether there’s enough seam allowance to make further changes if needed. It’s also worth asking about the seller’s height, measurements and the shoe height they may have worn to get a better idea of the fit.
• Check the condition: Ask for recent, clear photos of the dress from different angles, paying particular attention to the embellishments, hem, train, bust and underarms for marks, discolouration, pulls or damage.
• Ask about storage: Find out how the dress has been stored since the wedding. A dress kept somewhere damp or in poor conditions may have yellowing, odours or fabric damage.
• Try before you buy: If you can view or try on the dress, do it. It's the best way to check the fit, condition and how you feel in it before handing over your money.
• Factor in the extras: Remember to budget for professional cleaning, alterations, shipping and any repairs that might be needed. A bargain dress can quickly become less of a bargain if these costs aren't factored in.
