When Amsale Aberra set out to find her own wedding gown in 1985, she felt disinclined to don the full-skirted, overly-embellished, puffed-sleeve dresses typical of the time period. Instead, she took matters into her own hands, crafting a simple, elegant gown—and changing the bridal industry forever.
Over the next three decades, Aberra would produce a renowned collection of iconic gowns with graceful, refined detailing: illusion necklines, delicate button-backs, perfect pleating, intricate embellishments. The modern, minimalist designs of Amsale triggered a major shift in bridalwear: a new focus on what the brand calls “modern femininity, unstated glamour, and attention to detail.” Amsale implemented a couture approach, with each dress constructed for the specific bride who chose it, and relied on luxurious fabrics, straightforward silhouettes, and impeccable workmanship to sculpt statement-making gowns for sophisticated brides. “Modern simplicity in polished fabrics is the epitome of Amsale,” says flagship salon manager Apri Brown.

After Aberra’s death in 2018, the brand continued under the leadership of Amsale’s husband, Neil Brown; their daughter, Rachel Brown; creative director Sarah Swann; and head designer Michael Cho. The flagship salon in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, with its soothing, tasteful aesthetic, offers the full complement of Amsale designs, including pre- and post-wedding frocks, mother-of-the-bride and -groom formalwear, and chic options for bridesmaids. High ceilings, plush furniture, and spacious private rooms create an unhurried atmosphere for brides and their browsing partners to review each gown. For the bride who already know she wants to wear Amsale on her wedding day, there's no better place to shop for her gown than the designer's lovely flagship location.
“Collaborating with the bride to find the perfect dress—for them—is such a special experience,” says Brown. “Brides often begin their wedding-dress search with a specific idea, only to fall in love with something entirely different. That moment when a bride first sees themselves in 'the one,' radiating with confidence, is unforgettable. Trust how you feel the moment you see yourself in the gown—and trust your stylist to guide you toward the style and silhouette that’s truly right for you.”
