Key Takeaways
- A Kuwaiti bride ended her marriage just three minutes after the ceremony when her groom mocked her for tripping.
- The judge granted an annulment immediately, making this couple’s union possibly the shortest marriage in history.
- Five years later, the bride’s bold decision is inspiring others to prioritize respect and self-worth in relationships.
When couples say “I do,” they vow to spend the rest of their lives together. Well, for one bride and groom, their promise to stay together for eternity was short-lived—it lasted just a few minutes, in fact. Indy100 reported on July 21, 2024, that a pair of Kuwaiti newlyweds got divorced a mere three minutes after their ceremony in 2019, which may be the world’s shortest marriage.
According to the publication, the couple decided to end their committed union after the groom made a scathing comment about the bride. While making her way out of the courthouse in Kuwait, where they wed, the woman supposedly tripped, which prompted the groom to mock her, allegedly calling her “stupid” for her accidental fall. Clearly offended by the groom’s remark, the woman reportedly turned back around and asked the judge to dissolve their marriage. A report in Metro noted that the judge issued an annulment right then and there.
Five years later, the woman’s bold move is now trending on social media. On X, many praised the former bride for her decision and expressed their support. “If this is how he acts right at the beginning, it’s better to leave him,” one person remarked. Another agreed, writing, “A marriage with no respect is a failed one righty from the beginning.”
Some even saw the bride’s response as an empowering act that is inspiring for others in similar situations. “I went to a wedding where the groom spent his speech making fun of his wife like it was some kind of roast, as did the father,” an X user recounted. “She should have done what this woman did.”
Before this viral couple, another bride and groom may have held the accolade for having the shortest marriage—at least in Hollywood. Per Guiness World Records, actors Jean Acker and Rudolph Valentino said “I do” in 1919, but 20 minutes later, the bride started having second thoughts. She seemed to resolve the issue by allegedly locking her husband out of their honeymoon suite. Valentine supposedly knocked on the door for 20 minutes, but when Acker still didn’t open it, he decided to go home.
