Choosing the perfect wedding gift for your favorite engaged couple is fun—until you have to shop for the duo who has everything, that is. “Couples who live together tend to add fewer things to their wedding registry due to the fact they’ve already established a life together and have combined the many household items they had prior to living together,” says Summer Newman, the founder of Summer Newman Events. According to experts, it’s still important for couples who are already cohabitating to offer their friends and family gifting ideas. “Creating a registry is the best way to guide them in that direction,” says Fallon Carter, the founder and creative director of Fallon Carter Events. “Plus, a registry helps you avoid getting things you don’t want or need. In my thinking, that’s sustainable!”
Still adverse to such a list? Even if you feel content with everything you have right now, it can be helpful to consider your future when you’re searching for items to add to your registry. “You may not host holidays or have the space to entertain large groups right now, but one day you will,” says Eden Delaune, a stylist and gift consultant at Bisette. “My mother always hosts, you say? One day she won’t. One day all of the excitement will be at your house. Your registry is the opportunity to prepare in advance for these milestone celebrations.”
If you’re already living with your partner, your registry will likely look a little different from those who are buying everything for the first time. Ahead, nine experts share some innovative ideas for the couple who’ve already established a home together.
Upgraded Essentials
A wedding registry is the perfect opportunity to elevate everyday home essentials. “Focus on key items that will make a difference in your daily life,” says Cameron Forbes, the founder and CEO of Forbes Functions. “This could include swapping out basic sheets and towels for more luxurious Egyptian or Turkish versions, upgrading to professional copper or stainless-steel cookware, or registering for artisan glassware or elegant serving pieces that will make entertaining feel effortless. Couples can also consider upgrades to their luggage, vacuum, flatware and glassware, grill, small appliances, coffee table books—even their mattress!” Remember: Your registry is a chance to get the coveted items you’re dreaming of for your home. “This is your opportunity to acquire luxury, heirloom-quality pieces on someone else’s dime,” says Delaune.
A Honeymoon Fund
A honeymoon fund is a great option if you prioritize experiences over physical gifts. “The fund can be put towards hotel rooms, premium car services, spa treatments, intimate and exclusive excursions and exceptional dinner experiences,” says Newman. However, there are a few considerations to make before starting one. “When setting up your honeymoon fund, be specific,” says Forbes. “I always suggest breaking it down into meaningful categories, so guests feel more connected to their contributions. Instead of saying ‘Honeymoon Fund,’ think of curated experiences like ‘Romantic Dinner in Positano’, ‘Hot Air Balloon Ride in Cappadocia’, or ‘Luxury Spa Day in Bali’. This makes gifting more personal and engaging for your guests.” When you do embark on one of these adventures, try to share a photo of the experience with the person who gave the gift, says Courtney Opalko, the founder of Courtney Opalko Etiquette.
Innovative Technology
If you want to simplify your daily routine, consider technology that can help make your life easier. “A smart thermostat for energy efficiency or a voice-controlled assistant are great examples [of this],” says Forbes. “As is a high-end sound system to elevate the ambiance in your home, whether you’re hosting friends or enjoying a cozy night in together.” In the kitchen, consider smart appliances, like a Wi-Fi-enabled coffee maker for barista-quality mornings, a high-performance air fryer, a smart oven for cooking, or a premium blender for smoothies and soups.”

Travel-Related Items
“Travel is one of the most memorable ways to celebrate your new chapter, and instead of accumulating more ‘stuff,’ you can invest in creating unforgettable memories as a couple,” says Forbes. Items such as design-forward luggage, weekender bags and backpacks, airfare and hotel gift cards, elevated travel wallets, noise-cancelling headphones, and travel speakers are all ideal picks if you and your partner love to book a trip. “And don’t forget the little luxuries,” Forbes adds. “A silk travel pillow, a high-end toiletry kit, a sleek passport holder, and personalized luggage tags will make travel feel so effortless and chic.”
Unique Home Items
“Your home is a great place to consider your wants—rather than your needs—if you’re already living together,” says Mariah Grumet Humbert, the author of What Do I Do? Every Wedding Etiquette Question Answered. “Perhaps you’ve always wanted a cappuccino maker, a juicer, or a set of fancy crystal glasses. This may be one of the only times in your life you get to make a list of things you want with people who are willing to purchase them for you.”
Other items to consider: A wine fridge, fire pit, cashmere blanket, pizza oven, or things for a guest room, such as extra towels, bed linens, and bathrobes. “For the couple who loves hosting, include beautiful glassware, a statement bar cart, an elegant charcuterie board, a set of personalized cocktail glasses, and a premium wine decanter to make entertaining feel extra special,” says Forbes. While you may have plates and flatware covered, big salad bowls and platters, along with cheese boards and little dishes, are great to have on hand for a future dinner party or cocktail party, adds Devin Kirk, the chief creative officer at Jayson Home.

Shared Experiences
Whether it’s a private pasta-making class, a weekend spa getaway, concert tickets, or courtside seats to your favorite team, shared experiences allow you and your partner to create new memories together. “For adventure lovers, a national park pass, scuba diving lesson, or guided hiking tour can be unforgettable,” Forbes says. “Foodies may enjoy a Michelin-star dining experience, wine tasting tour, or craft cocktail-making class. Sports and music fans appreciate concert tickets or a VIP game experience.” And such activities are ultimately one of the secrets to a long-lasting partnership. “Experiences are the glue that hold all couples together,” says Robin Wilson, the CEO and founder of Clean Design Home. “Couples learn about each other while also having a lot of fun making memories via a shared experience.” It also appears that such items are a frequent addition to the list for soon-to-be newlyweds: “Excursions are some of the most popular registry items on our site,” says Sara Margulis, the CEO of Honeyfund.
Subscription Boxes
Subscription boxes all have one thing in common: They’re a gift that keeps on giving. If such a present appeals to you, consider asking for a bouquet, food-based, wine, or candle subscription from your loved ones. However, if you’re a guest looking to give such a gift to a couple, make sure to keep their lifestyle in mind. “As a guest, it’s important to understand the preferences of the couple—don’t make the mistake of sending a bacon box to committed vegetarians or a monthly flower subscription if one half of the couple is allergic to pollen,” Opalko says.
Collectibles
Whether you’re dreaming of starting a collection or are already tethered to one, considering using your registry as an opportunity to build it. “These items can reflect shared interests, travels, or milestones in your relationship,” says Forbes. “Think about art pieces or sculptures that capture your personal style or remind you of special moments. Or unique vintage finds, such as antique furniture or collectibles, that can become treasured heirlooms passed down through generations.”
Stuck on what to collect? Art is a great place to start. “Now is the time to indulge in something like real art,” says Kirk. Select works that represent you and your partnership. “Think about pieces that will become heirlooms, conversation starters, and visual reminders of your relationship, the kinds of things you’ll cherish for years and years to come,” says Laura Hodges, the owner of Domain by Laura Hodges Studio.
Gift Cards
Gift cards are a flexible and practical registry option, allowing you to splurge on honeymoon experiences, home upgrades, or even just dining out. Some sites allow you to register for a variety of different brands, including airlines, accommodations, and home improvement stores.
Charitable Donations
If you have a desire to give back, consider asking your attendees to make a charitable donation in lieu of a gift. “It’s an amazing way to show support to an organization you love and allows your guests to give back in your honor,” says Carter. Unsure of where to ask your guests to direct their funds? The Good Beginning can help you find a charity that aligns with what you and your partner care about. “I love the idea of beginning a marriage grounded in generosity and community as it sets the tone for the life you’re building together,” says Hodges. If you do decide to raise money for an organization, make sure to share with your guests the impact their contribution made, Opalko says. “For example, ‘Thanks to your generous donation, we were able to provide meals for 150 adoptable dogs at our local shelter.’”

Funds for Your Hobbies
Thoughtful gifts that enable you and your partner to enjoy your favorite pastimes together are always a smart idea. “Mutual hobbies allow couples to share stories of their shared interests,” says Wilson. “These could include boating, skiing, ice skating, snorkeling, as well as sporting events, such as golf and tennis tournaments.” When building a registry with such a goal in mind, consider the interests that you and your partner often spend money pursuing—or those that you dream of having the funds to do one day. “Skiers and snowboarders appreciate ski passes, lift tickets, quality outerwear, while culinary enthusiasts welcome cooking classes and workshops,” Hodges says. “Wellness and mindfulness enthusiasts enjoy yoga and spa memberships, while entertainers appreciate board games, puzzles, and portable speakers.”
Cash
Whether you want to renovate your home, pay off debt, or simply grow your savings, cash funds may be a practical option for your registry. However, even though asking for cash is now considered acceptable in most modern cultures, take care in how you present such a request to invitees. “Wording is important,” Forbes says. “Instead of calling it a cash fund you can title it, ‘In Lieu of Physical Gifts’. Also, if you’re opting for a cash fund, do not make your ‘goal’ visible to your guests.” Some experts suggest offering a cash fund alongside other gifts in your registry so that it doesn’t look like a cash drive. “When approached thoughtfully, it can feel just as intentional, elevated, and meaningful as any physical gift,” says Hodges.
Professional Services
Listing a specialist or a tutor on a gift registry is a unique way to feature something different. “If a couple is moving into a new home or just looking to redecorate, an interior design consultation, a home organizer, or a professional gardener can help curate a space that feels uniquely their own,” Delaune says. However, such a request can also expand beyond the needs on your to-do list. For example, if you want to improve your surfing skills, list some time with an instructor—or if you dream of learning how to play the guitar, add music lessons to your registry.
Meal Kits
If you and your partner love to cook together, consider asking for a meal kit service. This type of subscription allows you to try new recipes, learn culinary skills, and transform the must-do task of making dinner into a fun at-home date night.
